New Year’s Resolutions From ER Doctors
New Year’s Resolutions to Avoid a Trip to the ER
We are all a work in progress, and every year around this time, we resolve to become better than we were last year, unfortunately, most of us don’t set realist goals, and before the month of January is over, we have already given up on our New Year’s resolutions.
To help you avoid the frustration and stress that these New Year goals can generate, we spoke to several physicians at Prestige ER, we wanted to find out what resolutions they consider are most important and how to achieve success.
Get Some Shut-Eye
According to the CDC more than a third of adult individuals in the United States don’t get enough sleep on a regular basis.
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine and The Sleep Research Society recommend that adults 18-60 get at least 7 hours of sleep at night to enjoy optimal health.
Individuals who regularly sleep less than 7 hours a night are at a higher risk of developing serious conditions like:
- Diabetes
- High Blood Pressure
- Obesity
- Heart Disease
- Stroke
- Mental distress
So, the good doctors at Prestige ER recommend that this year you resolve to go to bed earlier, so you can wake up feeling refreshed and eager to face the challenges ahead.
Stop Smoking
We know this is a tough one, chances are you have tried quitting before and did not succeed, but this doesn’t mean you should stop trying. ER physicians warn us that cigarette smoking is the leading preventable cause of death in the United States, and it increases the risk of developing serious health conditions such as:
- Heart Disease
- Cardiovascular Disease
- Lung and Other Types of Cancer
- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
- Reduced Fertility
- Diabetes
- Vision Problems including Cataracts, and Age-Related Macular Degeneration.
The advice we received from Prestige ER was, “If you really want to quit smoking, don’t try doing it alone”. Don’t be afraid or ashamed to ask your doctor, family, and friends for help, it is also a good idea to join a support group, remember you are never alone in your journey to become a healthier person. Oh, and with all the money you save from not buying any cigarettes, you can treat yourself to something nice! If you experience breathing problems, please visit Prestige ER immediately.
Cut Back on Drinking
For most of us drinking alcohol is not a problem. However, recent studies indicate that many of us could be inadvertently exceeding the maximum daily intake of alcohol which is two drinks for men and one drink for women. A standard drink is considered as:
- A 12-ounce beer
- 5 ounces of wine
- 5 ounces of hard liquor
The doctors reminded us that consuming too much alcohol on a regular basis can lead to:
- Liver failure
- Certain types of cancer
- Infertility
Their suggestion? Try limiting your alcohol intake to the maximum recommended daily dose, and if possible only consume alcohol on the weekends or during social gatherings.
Improve Your Eating Habits
We all want to lose those extra pounds we gained during the holidays but please stay away from fad diets. Crash diets can do more harm than good. Also, don’t try changing all your eating habits at once, instead make a couple of small changes at a time.
As an example, cut back on the number of sugary drinks you consume daily or substitute white bread for whole wheat bread, once you have adopted these changes as a way of life, then you can add more changes to your routine.
Make sure you add more fruits and vegetables to your diet, add probiotic foods like yogurt, apple cider vinegar, olives, pickles, and dark chocolate.
The caring doctors at Prestige ER warned us about the so-called quick loss diets, according to them, quick weight loss diets have no real benefits:
- They do not provide permanent change, so you are likely to gain all the weight back.
- You are not losing fat, instead, you are losing water and muscle.
- Fad diets can lead to dehydration, gallstones and malnutrition, headaches, constipation, dizziness, and a lot of other negative side effects
A healthy weight loss rate is 1 to 2 pounds per week. Most ER doctors agree that they see patients at emergency centers and emergency rooms as a result of dangerous dieting. Think in the long term and avoid a health crisis.
Make Time for Physical Activity
We are all busy, and sometimes making it to the gym just doesn’t seem to be on our priority lists, especially if you don’t like exercising, but the reality is physical activity is necessary if you want to be healthy.
If you don’t like going to the gym or simply can’t find the time to go to one, here are some ways for you to increase your physical activity:
- Take the stairs instead of the elevator
- Walk to nearby places when possible
- Dance around the house
- Take your dog for a longer walk than usual
- Play with your kids
Aside from helping you keep in shape and maybe drop a few pounds, physical activity is a great way to combat stress. Please continue to read our health, safety and awareness tips from Prestige ER to stay on top of being Happy and Healthy in 2018 and beyond!
